Problems to Profits: E-Waste Issues Discussed at University of Maryland

Julie Keough addresses an audience members question at the e-waste panel.

(3/1/2012, Ellicott City, MD) – From problem to profit was the topic of a paneled discussion on e-waste issues at the University of Maryland’s Social Enterprise Symposium. The panel featured three predominate speakers, including: E-Structors’ CEO and Co-Founder Julie Keough, Paulie Anthony of the certified cellphone recycler e-Cycle, and MD House Delegate Kirill Reznik. Collectively they discussed the issues facing the electronics recycling industry, private business, and the role that government plays in promoting sustainability.

The panel brought in undergraduate and graduate students, UMD faculty and staff, and area business professionals all looking to learn more about electronics recycling. The audience asked a variety of questions about the e-cycling industry, what they could do to help the issue, and about the role that government is taking in the matter. Additionally, many of the students were interested in learning more about E-Structors businesses success and how they could be more successful in the future.

The Social Enterprise Symposium is hosted through the Smith Business School. It aims to provide participants with the opportunity to learn directly from business professionals in fields of sustainability, corporate and social responsibility, entrepreneurship, and environmentalism. This is the 4th year for the event and over 1000 individuals attended throughout the day.
